When He Returns, the Mountains Will Be Buried in Snow

On the eighth day of the twelfth lunar month in 1978, snow fell in silence. Su Wan folded the date “March 16” into her calendar, waiting for Lu Zheng to return so they could marry. Later, she folded the corner of that calendar page again and again. What she waited for was a land requisition notice, letters that arrived too late, and the words, “She’s married now.” They each lived out half a lifetime unmarried, apart from one another. Then, many years later, an unsent letter was found. It turned out the person she had waited for had been waiting for her all along.
