The Light Gatherer of Long Street

At twenty-nine, Wen Li was laid off and dragged her suitcase to the southern city of Lancheng. On an old street called Chang Street, she rented a room with Chen Ye, a programmer drowning in debt. The old street was home to Zhou the cobbler, Sister Fang, who ran a restaurant, and Su Xiaotang, who kept a flower shop. They weathered a typhoon together, pooled their money when the restaurant was about to close, and stood together when the demolition crew arrived. Later, they founded the “Together Association”: whenever someone ran into trouble, everyone pitched in. Wen Li’s greatest skill was taking old things that others had thrown away, cleaning them up and fixing them until they shone again.
