A biochemical disaster known as the "Black Tide" swept across the world, turning cities into lairs, and survivors lingering in the shadow of mutants. This is not a natural disaster - it was caused by the deliberate release of the genetically reassorted virus HX-7 by Derivatives, the world's largest biotechnology group. Founder He Yandong believes in extreme social Darwinism and designs the doomsday as a huge "survival chess game": the land is divided into experimental areas, survivors are evaluated and screened based on dimensions such as combat, collaboration, and trust, and those with outstanding performance are "promoted" to the underground city "Ark" - which looks like a reward, but is actually an in vivo experiment. Those who fail are led to high-infection areas and eliminated by the hands of mutants.
