I missed the final exam for the high school entrance exams. Three years of hard work, all washed away in tears. I packed up and prepared to go to a vocational school, but luckily, my mom had connections and pulled strings to get me into a top high school.
Sure, it was a bit remote, and I’d never heard of the place before, but at least it was a top high school.
Who knew that by the time I’d taken a plane from home, I still wouldn’t have made it there? What kind of school can you not reach even after flying? Seriously!
After landing, I switched to a taxi. At the end of the taxi ride, I switched to a bus, which carried me along eighteen winding bends in the mountain road and deep into the mountains. From there, I had to take a motorcycle taxi, luggage in one hand and a washbasin in the other.
For my future, for that top high school, I’d endure it.
But when I arrived, all I saw was desolation, and a gate made of rusty scrap metal.
A herd of… wild buffalo? Eating… grass?!
“Hey, Mom, is this really a proper school?”
“Don’t worry! I asked your second uncle to check. It’s a proper key high school!”
I was frozen solid, with no way back. Since I was here, I might as well make the best of it. With my slippers on and my pots, pans, and bowls rattling along, I successfully moved in. Apparently, new students didn’t have to attend classes during their first week.
Lying in bed and staring at the ceiling, I thought, this isn’t so bad.
That night, I got hungry and went out to buy something to snack on. Who could have guessed some wild man would suddenly leap out of a bush?
He slapped me so hard I flew two li with my face toward the ground. I got up and rubbed my butt, then looked at the wild man and saw that he was covered in blood.
…
That thing tore a huge hole in the back of my pants, so I ran off holding up my waistband. I ran three steps, looked back, and burst into tears. “You bastard! Those were the brand-name pants endorsed by my goddess!”
…
“Bad? This is awful! Hey! What’s going on?! Didn’t I come to a school? What even is that thing? Why is it drooling and chasing me without letting up?!”
