When he unexpectedly returned to the moment he first met Tang Sanzang at Five Elements Mountain, Wukong altered the headband’s restriction and set off on the journey west at his own pace. He refused to fight monsters to the death or compromise against his will. Seeing through the tribulations arranged by the gods, he understood the obsessions hidden deep in Bajie and Tang Sanzang’s hearts. He had planned to coast through the story, but discovered that taking shortcuts to avoid hardship only created dead ends that were even harder to escape.
