"The Vast Night" tells the story of the young intellectual Yu Zhifu's experience of bidding farewell to his friend Wu Chisheng and going to place A to teach. In his sorrow for farewell, he kept looking back on his decadent life in Japan and trying to reshape his spirit in a foreign land. However, not only was he deeply immersed in uncontrollable sexual impulses and perverted self-mutilation pleasure, he was also passively involved in the campus student movement controlled by the warlords. In the end, he himself became a zombie-like existence in the turbulent reality and nihilistic sensory enjoyment. That endless night was the collective tragedy of the old China that had nowhere to rest its awakened soul, and was in a dilemma amidst warlord warfare and social corruption.
