Sixteen-year-old Ichiro Okabe, a repairman at an electric lighting company, cherishes the dream of building an underground tank and becoming an underground tank captain. He practices writing "Future underground tank captain, Okabe Ichiro" every day to motivate himself. He tried a variety of methods, from imitating underground tanks to dig, to modifying electric fans inspired by snowplows, to studying the way moles dig, and kept exploring. Later, Ichiro joined the Junior Tank Corps and was promoted to noncommissioned officer, receiving the task of designing an underground tank. The No. 1 Tank he designed failed during testing, but he was not discouraged. After that, he worked harder, improved the design, and created the No. 2 Tank. So, will this experiment be successful? What other challenges will Ichiro face?
