A Pearl, Three Generations of Gleam

Grandma used a pearl to draw a comma for her mother's fate, and earned a breather in the troubled times that were about to come to an end. The luster of pearls has been eroded by the years, but what the mother has stripped out of them is a grammar of survival that is more permanent than the luster of pearls. She no longer repeats the story of her grandmother fishing for pearls to make a living, but reconstructs the grammar of desperate situations into poetry for the modern world. When this inheritance was handed over to me, the pearl had completed its mission: from a currency in circulation to a spiritual totem, and finally elevated to a creed - the real heirloom is not a gentle pearl, but a source of light when facing the abyss.
