The Incense Bearer of the Mortal World

Qiu Daoming is pulled into a folk-horror game called The Mortal World. Starting with the most basic ritual of “worship,” he travels through the Mortal World step by step, learning the true faces of the so-called “gods.”

Here, he has seen the Huang Immortal dispel pestilence in a fit of rage, and the Hu Immortal speak calmly of the workings of the universe. He has also seen corpse-controlling magic and curses turn people into puppets, and feng shui masters seize dragon veins...

But what Qiu Daoming has seen most often is the plight of the Mortal World's creatures, left without the gods' protection, driven mad and made to suffer as demons and evil spirits run rampant.

“What exactly do you want me to do?” Qiu Daoming asks the game.

“I want you to save the Mortal World, so that all its common folk, spirits and specters, ghosts and monsters, and even the gods across the heavens, will chant your name.”
