Wutao

Wutao (wùtáo) is another name for Taowu, an ancient ferocious beast. It is also the name of the man in this story, who has forgotten even his own name. Deep in debt from online loans he could never repay, Wang Wutao was driven into the night wind on the balcony of a three-story building. There, he wrote an offering in crimson blood, honored the spirits, and offered up his entire body. He thought he had gone mad, thought he had finally received some kind of "answer from the gods and spirits." In the end, he had merely sacrificed his family's lives, along with the last remnants of his humanity, beneath the threshold of the old house.
