The night I finished reading this book, I sat for a long time. It's not because the ending is so shocking - the ending is very peaceful, like a piece of snow, falling silently. But that calm was more painful than any wail. Because you know that after the snow melts, everything remains the same. That bird won't come back. Xia Yu will not become a "normal person" - she is already one, and she is the best and most perfect kind. Wang Lin will not become a "normal person" - she has tried, but she can't. This is probably the most cruel thing about this book: it is not telling you "how bad normal people are", it is telling you that you may be that "normal person".
