A Peasant's Son Can Do Great Things

There’s enormous potential in the countryside! In 1995, university graduate Nong Kewei scraped into a village official’s job despite ranking last in the written exam, then threw himself into a remote, impoverished valley. Starting at the very grassroots, he spent more than thirty years rooted in the land, turning a small village into a global model for rural revitalization. “I’m a grassroots official, born of the countryside, with my heart devoted to its farmers.” This is a story of an underdog’s rise, a love song set among the fields, and a history of change in rural China, depicting the sweeping development of agriculture and rural communities in modern China.
