In our third year together, Chen Xu took me home for Lunar New Year to meet his parents. We'd agreed that this would be the year we settled down. The table was laden with steaming dishes. Chen Xu's mother smiled as she put a rib in my bowl. "Wanwan, eat more. You're too thin." I smiled and thanked her, already planning to find a chance after dinner to tell them that I was the daughter of the richest man in the country. After all, Chen Xu and I had come this far. I didn't want to keep it from them any longer.
"Sister-in-law, do you go to the Xishan nursing home often?" A clear, jarring voice shattered the warmth in the room.
It was Chen Xu's assistant, Lin Wei. She'd come along today too. She said she was heading the same way, so Chen Xu brought her with us.
Now she rested her chin on her hand, studying me with an innocent look. "I think I've seen you there a few times. I heard people say you're pretty cheap to keep as a mistress."
