Cold Star

In a binary planetary system, two planets lie just fifty thousand kilometers apart, locked in synchronous rotation. Tianyuan Star and Shadow Star are two independently evolved, strikingly similar humanoid civilizations. Under the eternal gaze of “spectators in the sky,” they progress from performative rivalry into the space age. Lin Kai, the lowest-ranking observation assistant at an observatory on Tianyuan Star, discovers one night that every light on Shadow Star has gone out at once. This discovery draws him into a struggle between civilizations far beyond anything he imagined, and into contact with a mysterious signal from Shadow Star. When two civilizations are too close, too visible, and too alike to trust one another, the ultimate security dilemma takes shape. From orbital kinetic weapons to AI network warfare, from nonlethal conflict to a crisis involving clouds of interstellar microbes, Lin Kai gradually grows from an overlooked technician into a bridge between the two civilizations. Black hole time anomalies, quantum-entanglement communications, rifts in spacetime... As diverging branches of the technological tree push the two civilizations toward vastly different futures, only by understanding the “other who is like me, yet unlike me” can they find a way to coexist. This is a hard science-fiction epic about two planets, two paths, and life’s search for coexistence among the stars.
