A Glimpse of Spring

After her mother died, Shen Weici was left alone, adrift like duckweed. She traveled a thousand miles to the capital to seek out her relatives. When she first entered the marquis’s residence, she had to tread carefully, facing difficulties at every turn. Yet she remained quiet and gentle throughout, never coveting a single thing from the household. She only wanted to find a suitable marriage for herself and a place to call home. Song Zhang, the capital’s infamous “King of Hell,” came from a distinguished noble family, wielded immense power, and looked down on everyone. When he first met Shen Weici, his eyes were full of contempt, and he went out of his way to humiliate her. Later, he saw her blushing and smiling at another man, her lovely eyes as bewitching as a fox spirit’s. He gave a cold laugh as he passed by, then secretly ruined a promising match for her. When she confronted him with red-rimmed eyes and asked why, he smiled lazily and cruelly. “Second Young Master Zhang passed the imperial examination at a young age and comes from a respectable family. How could you ever hope to marry into it? If you want a peaceful life, why not beg me? I might grant you the position of a favored concubine.” But the face-slapping came fast. In the end, he was the one kneeling outside her door, red-eyed and making a pathetic plea. “Ci, please…” “Don’t tear my heart out…” He stopped at nothing, even resorting to underhanded tactics for her. Only then did he realize he had already fallen for her.
