Not long after Empress Wang's death, Consort Xiao swears to become a cat demon and take on Wu Zetian. A sheet of human skin, white as paper and painted with brilliant peonies, appears as a river cat demon is spotted in Puzhou… Xu Yougong, an army officer whose brother was unjustly killed and whose case has yet to be cleared, is determined to prove his elder brother's innocence. He does not believe in ghosts or gods. While everyone else avoids the cat-demon rumors, he goes alone to investigate thoroughly on the waters of the Ruchuan. But the resolution of the human-skin case sends shockwaves through the entire imperial court… - A principled civil official, a numbers-obsessed scholar, and a woman of fragile beauty and fleeting life willingly swept into the tides of history for the sake of the people.
