Outside the Social Clock

Xu Zhiyuan, a 32-year-old publishing editor, has long been worried about the "social clock" because she has not been married or promoted. Her parents' urging to marry, comparisons by colleagues, and the "perfect life" on social media have made her fall into self-doubt and consider herself a "loser in life." Her blind date, Shen Yizhen, is a freelance photographer who "does not follow common sense". He was once accused by his family of "not seeking advancement" for refusing a "996" job, but he insists on a "self-determined" lifestyle (following the core needs of autonomy, competence, and relevance). The encounter between the two began as a "coping blind date", but they resonated because of their shared experience of being "disciplined by society": Xu Zhiyuan envied Shen Yizhen's "relaxation", and Shen Yizhen admired Xu Zhiyuan's "sense of responsibility". But in getting along, the shadow of social comparison is still there: Xu Zhiyuan's parents are dissatisfied with Shen Yizhen's "no stable job", and Shen Yizhen's friends feel that Xu Zhiyuan is "too conventional"; Xu Zhiyuan will be anxious because of Shen Yizhen's "not planning for the future", and Shen Yizhen will also be tired because of Xu Zhiyuan's "excessive concern about other people's opinions". Their relationship faces multiple power dynamics: "who compromises" under family pressure, "who takes the lead" when it comes to their financial situation, and "who gives in" when it comes to life choices. In the end, under the influence of Shen Yizhen, Xu Zhiyuan began to reflect on whether she really wanted to "step by step" in her life. She rejected the "stable marriage" arranged by her family and chose to pursue the niche publishing field she loved. With Xu Zhiyuan's encouragement, Shen Yizhen also faced up to her need for "connection" and no longer deliberately avoided intimacy.
