Teacher Li, Jia Wei and "I" became connected through literature and experienced the changes from student days to society together. Teacher Li gave up his teaching position to pursue his literary dream, Jia Wei became a contractor, and "I" was looking for direction in literature workshops. The story shows the collision between ideals and reality, as well as the good and evil, responsibility and redemption in human nature through Teacher Li's joining the army, Jia Wei's construction site accident and "my" reflection. Teacher Li's sacrifice and Jia Wei's unexpected death became the catalyst to promote the inner growth of "I", reflecting the impermanence and fragility of life.
