Very thoughtful and historical!
He is a time traveler who came to the turbulent years from the late Qing Dynasty to the Republic of China. He did not directly intervene in the historical process, but regarded the world as a chess game, and calmly laid the groundwork in silence: cultivating down-and-out scholars into important officials of the National Government and professors at Yenching University with both political vision and depth of thinkers; helping bank employees transform into international financial giants and industrial leaders; forging ordinary skilled workers into scientists who care about their country; and even guiding a patient with hyperamnesia to become a senior media person and observer of the times in early China. He takes ideological enlightenment, industrial salvation, and technological advancement as his paths, and relies on modern thinking, systematic thinking, and advanced layout to silently reshape China in suffering. When the people were in despair, he lit up the lights and restored faith; when the society was full of fanaticism and ignorance, he loudly called for reason and promoted education; when the country was poor and weak, and the nation was in danger, he deployed industries in advance and devoted himself to laying the foundation for scientific research. He and his students created three major plans: "Ark Plan" - to mobilize funds and food to stabilize society and relieve people during the war; "Seed Plan" - to rescue and cultivate key talents, technologies and documents for the future New China; "Guihong Plan" - to attract overseas Chinese scientists and professionals from all walks of life to return to China and join in the great cause of national rejuvenation. He does not fight against the trend of history, nor does he try to dominate it. He is like a gardener who plants cold-resistant flower seeds in advance on the path that the glacier must pass through. When the glaciers melt and the earth is exposed, people will be surprised to find that spring seems to come earlier and flowers bloom all over the wilderness inadvertently. People won't know why he planted these, they will just enjoy this piece of life. This is the most profound compassion and wisdom of the time traveler: creating the future without owning it.
Gu Qingyun's betrayal had actually been predicted by Mr. Shen. He thought he was getting rid of his teacher, but in fact he was still completing his teacher's final teaching: how to become a pure "new era person" without any burden. At this point, Mr. Shen's mission as a time traveler has been completely completed. He is not eliminated by history, but like a rocket thruster, after sending satellites (New China and its representatives) into orbit, he actively chooses to fall into the atmosphere, burn up, and leave no trace. This is the ultimate "behind the scenes". This ending sublimates the personal tragedy, deeply explores the eternal paradox between the founder and the successor, the shadow and the light, the wisdom and the power, and goes beyond the simple duel between good and evil.
Gu Qingyun grew up from a poor scholar to a revolutionary hero, and eventually became one of the founders of the new regime who tried to "kill his father". He went from absolute admiration for Mr. Shen to interweaving dependence and suspicion, and finally to painful breakup and transcendence. His life is a concentrated expression of the success and cost of Mr. Shen's "enlightenment". Gu Qingyun's "betrayal" just proves that Mr. Shen has successfully created a modern personality that no longer needs a "prophet" to move forward. His pain and choice are the epitome of the torn apart between "tradition" and "modernity", "inheritance" and "break" in modern China. The existence of Gu Qingyun sublimates the entire story from a cool article about "an individual changes history" to a profound allegory about enlightenment, power and inheritance.
That era was such a heavy history!
A different kind of time-travel novel, worth recommending!
The angle is relatively new, and it has historical depth and philosophical height. I recommend it!
It's novel, although it's not a cool novel, but the story is compact and very thoughtful.
The idea is novel and seems to be a time-travel novel, but it breaks out of the old routine of time-travel novels.
It's not a fun read, it requires patience to read.
Very well written! Love reading! Thoughts are deep!
