Stay-Behind Cicada Season

The chirping of cicadas in a small village in eastern Henan has been going on for more than ten years. This is my story and the story of thousands of left-behind children. The backs of our parents became smaller and smaller in the dust raised by the cars. We guarded the old locust tree and the empty home, enduring our longing into a long wait. Parting is a compulsory course in childhood. We grow up watching each other off again and again, and when we grow up, we learn to look back and stare. When the children who were once left behind become people who have left home, they understand the helplessness and concern in their parents' luggage. This is not a sensational book, I just want to tell you the thoughts that are drowned out by the chirping of cicadas.
