Understanding Too Late

Told from Xu Zhen’s first-person perspective, this is a coming-of-age reflection on a secret crush, set against the feeling that “love rises with the wind, and when the wind dies down, the longing remains.” It unfolds a shy affection that began at first sight and lasted for years: from the day Zhou Yun, eyes red and swollen, burst into her youth, to the moment they became each other’s “one and only deskmate”; from quiet acts of care to the boy’s impulsive courage in standing up for her; from a broken promise before the high school entrance exams to the tentative reunion in high school. Hidden behind jokes and “brotherly friendship,” their feelings were ultimately trapped by their vastly different family circumstances and the bad timing. After one missed chance after another, they became a secret of regret that filled six years of a young woman’s life.

The writing is full of the particular tenderness and awkwardness of adolescence: breakfast tucked into a desk, a nasal spray passed her way, a signature on a shirt after the graduation photo, tentative messages across a screen, and a social media feed secretly revisited. In the end, it all comes down to the reply, “I was just passing through your life.” This is a story of a grand but unfulfilled secret love, of the heartbeats that come when the wind first stirs in youth, and of the life that must go on after it falls still.
