The Substitute You Want Is Me

When Gu Yanzhi signed my death notice with his own hand, I was lying on the operating table, having every memory of him removed.

Five years later, at an international jewelry exhibition, he stopped me with red-rimmed eyes. “Miss Lin’s designs look so much like those of my late fiancée.”

I smiled and brushed a finger over the mark left by the ring on my ring finger. “Mr. Gu, you have the wrong person. I’m a widowed single mother.”

Later, he searched through my daughter’s medical records and tore up the paternity test with trembling hands. “The tumor has a 99% hereditary rate... You lied to me!”

I pressed the alarm button and watched as security dragged him away. “Mr. Gu, would you like to come to my husband’s funeral?”

The date on the invitation was the very day he had announced his engagement all those years ago.
