Fragments of Alleyway Voices

At the Evening Breeze Convenience Store in an old alley in Xingzhou City, warm yellow light spilled over weathered walls, while the smell of instant noodles curled around the moss on the eaves.

As Sishu wiped down the shelves, her fingertips brushed an old pair of earphones a customer had left behind. A faint sound suddenly slipped into her ear: “Next time we meet, wait for me at the fish ball stall at the mouth of the alley.”

She tightened her grip on the rag. This was the secret she had kept for three months: when she touched old objects, she could hear scraps of whispered words that clung to them.

A notebook carried the murmur, “The comics from the bookshop at the end of the alley are due back.” A folded umbrella held the tender thought, “Once the rain stops, I’ll go buy Grandma’s bowl cakes.” A briefcase let slip the anxious words, “Whatever you do, don’t let the kids discover the secret hideout at the corner of the alley.”

These “Alley Echoes” became the old neighborhood’s gentle secret code. They helped Grandma find the orange cat hiding in the alleyways, slipped a sweet into the hand of a student preparing for exams, and warned delivery riders to avoid the loose paving stone at the alley entrance.

Then Jiang Che came through the door carrying an injured stray dog. A faint, trembling voice slipped from his stethoscope: “Can the rescue center at the end of the alley make it through this rainy season?”

The convenience store’s light brightened the paving stones at the alley entrance. Sishu knew that these scattered little voices from the alleyways would gather into a warmth that could illuminate the old neighborhood.
