Memories of the Bronze Sacred Tree

In 2800 BCE, a baby girl named Xiao Qing is born in a settlement by the Yazi River. Her first cry arrives with the dawn. A mysterious ritual binds her to a newly sprouted sacred tree, granting her unchanging youth and a long life. From that moment on, she becomes the eternal witness to this land.

With the rigor of a chronicle, the novel spans three hundred chapters and seventeen hundred years. Through Xiao Qing’s eyes, we experience the entire rise of Sanxingdui civilization, from its first sparks to its full glory: from stone tools to towering bronze sacred trees, from tribal alliances to the rise of a theocratic royal city, from shamanic dances and sacrifices to gleaming golden scepters. She helps plan the capital and witnesses bronze artisans create world-shaking treasures: the protruding-eyed mask, the sun-shaped artifact, and the kneeling figure bearing a vessel on its head. She experiences firsthand the supreme splendor of theocracy at its height.

But when the climate changes, resources run dry, and faith falters, she also witnesses the civilization’s most tragic decision: in a solemn “rite of return,” they smash and burn the nation’s sacred treasures, which embody the power of the gods, and bury them in the earth. Then the capital falls silent, the people migrate south, and Xiao Qing endures lonely years as the last guardian of the tomb, until her life and this land alike sink into silence.

Yet the story does not end there. In the modern era, as archaeologists’ probes awaken the slumbering bronzes, Xiao Qing’s memories, sealed away for a thousand years, stir as well. They become the final key to connecting past and present and understanding the rise and fall of this great civilization.

This is not only an epic about a lost bronze civilization, but also a grand ode to time, memory, and inheritance.
