Across the Five Ranges

The peasants lived in dire misery, exploited and oppressed by rural landlords and local strongmen. During a severe drought when the autumn harvest failed, landlords demanded rent and repayment of debts, leaving the peasants with nowhere to turn. In the Wuling Mountains, many tenant farmers were driven to ruin by landlords, their families destroyed. Wu Hongying’s family was a typical example of the fate of the poor. In the spring of 1933, when the army corps passed through Wu Family Village, it rescued Wu Hongying and set her on the path of revolution.
