The dumping of foreign cloth in the Shanghai Concession and mechanical embroidery impacted traditional handicrafts. Jiangnan embroidery workshops closed down one after another. Embroiderers either switched careers or became cheap laborers. Traditional embroidery art was on the verge of extinction.
