At four o'clock in the morning, I was riding my bike to get off work. The red lights at the intersection were flashing. A guy in a takeout uniform lay on the windshield and grinned at me - what was hanging between his teeth was not blood, but a whole trachea. My foot slipped, and the U-shaped lock hit the instep of my foot: it hurt, but at least it proved that I was still alive.
