Demoted to Servitude? I'll Return with a Million Soldiers at the City Gates

After the fall of a once-mighty military clan, the darling of the capital became a prisoner in the southern wilderness. Chu Lan, the legitimate daughter of the Marquis of Jing'an, had loved weapons more than finery since childhood. Raised in her father's army in the northern deserts, she mastered horsemanship, archery, and survival, but the noblewomen of the capital considered her crude and uncouth. The Great Chu dynasty valued civil officials over soldiers. The Marquis of Jing'an's family, whose power and achievements threatened the throne, was falsely accused of treason, stripped of its title, and dispossessed. The entire clan was exiled to the miasma-ridden southern border, a place known as “Ghosts Fear to Tread.” The newly crowned top scholar, who had broken off his engagement to her in hopes of currying favor with the powerful, was relieved to have escaped in time. But what awaited them was not news that Chu Lan had died far from home. When the guards escorting the prisoners were vicious and the other exiles preyed on the weak, Chu Lan used her bloodstained hands to redefine the rules. She drew her bow and hunted in the mountains and forests, leading her despairing kin to reclaim the first plot of land they could live off. With salt and iron tools, she broke through the barriers that had long kept them apart from the local tribes. Through overwhelming force and extraordinary intelligence, she subdued one defiant tribal chief after another. She built cities, developed irrigation, and opened trade routes, transforming “Ghosts Fear to Tread,” a place everyone had once shunned, into a wealthy and powerful kingdom in the south. Years later, when foreign invaders from the north trampled across the borders and the imperial army was driven back at every turn, the decaying dynasty finally remembered the daughter of the military clan it had cast aside. An imperial edict crossed countless mountains and rivers to reach her. Standing atop the southern royal city she had built with her own hands, Chu Lan gazed down at her people and army. Would she march north, or watch the dynasty fall? This time, I make the rules.
