The novel tells the story of the grievances and resentments between the Baolin family and the Ma family. The Baolin family moved to Ma's home shop and were ostracized and bullied by the Ma family. Sister Bao Zhi was persecuted for refusing the Ma family's proposal of marriage, and eventually jumped into a well to prove her innocence. Bao Lin grew up in adversity, fell in love with Lan Xiang, a state-owned worker, and overcame many difficulties to get married. Although the Ma family was powerful, it gradually declined in the changing times. With tenacity and unity, the Baolin family stood firm amidst the provocation and oppression of the Ma family and ushered in a new life.
