"The Great War" is a long historical novel based on the war between the Guangdong natives and foreigners during the Xianfeng period of the Qing Dynasty. The story begins with a manslaughter caused by a "feng shui dispute". Lai Bingnan, a 17-year-old Hakka boy, was involved in a murder case because he was looking for a place to build a grave for his father. He accidentally became the "adopted son" of the clan and was pushed into a fighting chariot. From a marginalized person with "no ancestors and no lineage" to an ethnic hero who "kills people to gain his surname", his fate fluctuates between swords and fire. The novel is cut from a Hakka perspective, interspersed with real historical archives and ethnic legends, and describes the collapse of local order and the rise of clan power in the Lingnan region in the late Qing Dynasty under the political vacuum. The hatred between people is not only the conflict between blood and land, but also the dislocation of ancestors, identity and memory. "If you don't bury your ancestors, your ancestors will bury you" - this is a battle for land between the dead and the living, and it is also an absurd battle about human nature and destiny.
