The Marquis's Wife Wants Wealth, Not Love

Before I married the heir to the Marquis of Yuanyang, I already knew he had a favored mistress whom he doted on beyond all reason. On our wedding night, she stood outside the bridal chamber in the snow and wind, playing the pipa, and the heir abandoned me and rushed out to her. The mistress looked at me with haughty contempt. “So what if you’re his legal wife? The one he doesn’t love is the real third party!” The heir was cold and heartless. “I can give you the dignity befitting the mistress of the household, but don’t ever dream of having my heart!” Everyone expected me to be miserable and heartbroken. After all, a woman who couldn’t win her husband’s heart had no hope for the rest of her life. Instead, I felt genuinely relieved. As the mistress of the marquis’s household, I had never wanted a man’s fickle heart. I wanted wealth and power, firmly in my own hands. I wanted to use their influence to build a life of my own.
