I was Chang’e of the Moon Palace. My obsession with the mortal world’s earthly pleasures and my husband, reincarnated there, led me to disaster and ultimately to my death, while Wu Gang, the woodcutter who felled the cassia tree, fled to the mortal realm as a spirit. Later, stripped of my memories, I descended to the mortal world with my younger sister, the Jade Rabbit, to find Wu Gang. We married the emperor and a general of the Great Ye Dynasty, respectively. But after their beloved Wujun returned, they no longer cherished us. The general caused my sister’s death, and the emperor cruelly imprisoned me. In the end, I took my own life in despair, regained my memories as Chang’e, returned to my immortal position, and made amends for the disaster. I was no longer bound by obsession.
