On my first visit to my boyfriend’s family home, they immediately put me through the wringer. They made me, someone who couldn’t cook, prepare a whole table of dishes, then left me to clean up by myself afterward. They also expected me to look after his one-year-old nephew and his intellectually disabled older brother. Too embarrassed to refuse, I did everything they asked. That night, my boyfriend happily told me, “Great! You’ve passed, and you can marry into our family!” Only then did I realize his whole family had been testing me. I may have passed, but I never agreed to marry him.
