[Reading Guide]:

1. The heroine is empathetic but not a pushover: she is clever and kind, and not defined by romance. The other characters are complex and realistic, with no clear lines between good and evil. This is a coming-of-age story in which she gradually grows into a powerful female lead.

2. The plot is packed with foreshadowing. The episodic stories vary in style, feature plenty of imaginative ideas, and draw on the imagery of the Classic of Mountains and Seas. The main characters' romance is a slow burn.
