Closed time-like curve Light cone When discussing the evolution of a system in general relativity, or limiting the discussion to Minkowski spacetime, physicists often refer to the "light cone". A light cone represents any possible future evolution of an object in a given current state, or any possible future position given its current position. An object's possible future positions are limited by how fast the object can move, up to the speed of light. For example, an object is located at position p at time t0 and can only move to a position within c(t1 − t0) at time t1. Special Theory of Relativity In the theory of relativity, time-like curves are physically achievable motion trajectories in space and time. It is very common for a moving space trajectory to be closed, such as the movement of a pendulum or the motion of a planet. Its space trajectory is (approximately) closed in an appropriate reference system. However, the closure of a physically achievable movement trajectory in space and time (that is, the formation of a so-called "closed time-like curve") is no small matter. Because the trajectory in space and time not only records all the spatial positions that the motion passes through, but also records the moments when it passes through each spatial position. Therefore, the closure of the space-time trajectory means not only returning to the origin in space, but also returning to the origin in time. In other words, the closure of the space-time trajectory means that time loses its one-way character in the practical sense, or that it becomes possible to construct a time machine! Simply put, every event on a closed timelike curve is simultaneously the past and future of another event, which is an extraordinary connection between time and space. General Relativity CTC has an uncomfortable habit of appearing as "locally" undisputed exact solutions to Einstein's field equations, the core of general relativity, which are among the most important solutions. These include: Kerr vacuum (this is a model of a black hole with no electric charge, magnetic charge and rotation) van Stockum dust (this is a model of cosmic dust with a columnar symmetry structure) Gödel Λ dust (Gö del lambdadust) (this is a model of cosmic dust under a carefully selected cosmological constant term Λ) J. Richard Gott proposed a mechanism for using cosmic strings to create CTCs. Several of these examples, like Tipler's cylinders, are quite unnatural, but the "outside" part of Kerr's solution is thought to be somewhat general, so it is quite unsettling to learn that it contains CTCs "inside" it. Most physicists feel that the CTC in such a solution is an artifact.

Gödel's Universe Gödel's Universe shows that the rotation of the universe distorts space in such an extreme way that it closes time. Gödel proved that such a universe satisfies Einstein's field equations but not Newton's gravity. Godel's universe is a constantly rotating universe. This kind of universe does not expand, and all matter rotates uniformly around an axis of symmetry. It also contains Einstein's cosmological constant, but the difference is that the cosmological constant here is less than zero, so what is generated is gravity, which together with the gravity of matter offsets the centrifugal force generated by rotation. That's interesting enough in itself, but Gödel's universe also has a completely unimaginable property: it allows for time travel. Gödel proved that some paths in spacetime form closed loops. Most people, including Einstein, believed that such a thing would violate other laws of physics and lead to logical paradoxes often played out in science fiction movies (e. G., Killing one's own baby self).
