The book tells the legendary story of Liu Xuan, the daughter of Liu Ji in the Ming Dynasty, and her lifelong struggle to save Taoism and reproduce more than 7,000 classic Taoist scriptures that were destroyed by the emperor of the Yuan Dynasty. It intersperses the emotional entanglements between two contemporary men from childhood to middle age, Zhu Di, a top figure in the temple, and Zhang Yuchu, the first Taoist.
