Year of Famine: The Beloved Little One Is Heaven’s Own Daughter

Xingxing was picked up off the street. At five and a half, the little girl was pretty as a picture, with soft, plump cheeks and delicate skin. The villagers, gaunt and thin from years of famine, could only stare: “...What does this child eat to look so healthy?!”

At first, the village chief took Xingxing in. That night, thunder crashed from the sky and destroyed his house. Zhou Laosan took her in for the reward money, but that very night his bed collapsed and he injured his leg. Rumors spread in an instant, and everyone said little Xingxing was a jinx. Xingxing planted her hands on her hips in protest. “Xingxing is the Xingxing in ‘lucky star’!”

No one believed little Xingxing was a bringer of good fortune. Only Zhou Laoda and Zhao Guihua brought the unwanted girl home, and the whole family spoiled her rotten. Later, the Zhou Laoda household's life kept getting better and better. The villagers grew jealous and asked how they'd made their fortune. Zhou Laoda gave them a smug smile. “Ever since we took in our little lucky star, I don't know how it happened, but somehow we just got rich.”

The villagers were consumed with regret, all wanting to share in Xingxing's good fortune. Xingxing pattered home as fast as she could. “No sharing, no sharing! I'm Zhou Xingxing now, a member of the Zhou family.”
