On August 8, 1945, the Soviet government declared war on Japan. The Central Committee of the Communist Party of China issued a statement calling for a nationwide counterattack. The units of the New Fourth Army immediately launched a fierce attack on the Japanese and puppet troops and launched a siege on a column of Japanese and puppet troops in the northern Jiangsu area. In order to prevent the Japanese rescue, the superiors sent Li Jian and Qiao Yu to disguise themselves as husband and wife and lead a small team into the Japanese town of Xingcheng. They launched brutal struggles with the Japanese aggressors and traitors again and again, shattering the Japanese reinforcements' plan to deliver supplies and rescue, and contributing to the main force's annihilation of the Japanese army.
