I’ve Caught You Again

“Will you come with me?” At first, Xingzhi slowly raised her eyes and sized up the young man standing before her in the pouring rain. Lean arms, skin darkened by the sun, and a white shirt that had seen countless washes. I can’t afford to keep him. But that face looked like it was worth a fortune. The rain came down in torrents. Exhausted in body and mind, she paid no attention and lowered her eyes, wrapping her arms around herself. “Come with me.” A jacket that did little to keep out the wind and rain settled over Xingzhi’s shoulders. Strong hands pulled her to her feet. Only then did Xingzhi’s eyes widen. The figure bursting into her dim, lifeless gaze abruptly brought it to color. Later, Gu Ye not only sheltered her from the storms of that day, but from every storm that followed. Gu Ye had seen Xingzhi before. At a jewelry gala, she had been the heiress adored by all beneath the lights. The priceless gemstones everyone else coveted were nothing more than playthings to her. The disdain in her eyes was like a chasm, forever keeping Gu Ye out in the darkness. When he saw her again, standing in the rain, she looked like a lost little beast. The acceptance in her dark eyes pierced his heart, leaving him aching, yet perversely relieved. Now that I’ve found you, you’re mine. Everyone in Town C knew Gu Ye had brought home a treasure as beautiful as a goddess. From then on, he pinched every penny just to give the precious darling of his household the best. He held her in his hands for fear she might fall, and kept her in his mouth for fear she might melt. He pampered her like royalty. If she asked for the stars, Gu Ye would risk his life to pluck them from the sky, and then worry that their sharp edges might hurt her hands.
