The Curious Tales of Kaifeng

A sharp-tongued, cold underworld immortal male lead who isn't a traditional ghostly immortal x a yin-yang-eyed female lead who barely even qualifies as a Daoist priestess. A pair of not-quite-human oddballs: one clueless but reasonably clever, the other genuinely glum. Neither has reincarnated, so this isn't a dual-lifetime romance about past-life entanglements. It's a happy ending told in episodic chapters, but not a conventional sugary romance. It features ghost stories and the supernatural, isn't scary, and takes place in an alternate history, so please don't nitpick the details. The female lead and male lead were entangled in their previous lives, and they can't escape each other in this one either. Adopted in this life by a half-baked old Daoist who survives by cheating and swindling, the female lead has nothing to her name and finds it hard to escape poverty. She worries about making ends meet all year round. After being attacked by an evil spirit because of a string of murders, she gets caught up with the male lead, a rogue immortal sent by the underworld to investigate. He was punished by having to cultivate on his own in the underworld for 500 years before he could attain immortal status. Thus begins the inescapable thread of fate that binds them in this life.
