“A lame donkey with a broken millstone, a fool with a shrew. What a perfect match!” people jeered. “Who says my husband is a fool?” Tang Tang said, her pregnant belly jutting out, a big kitchen knife in one hand. “Bah! Who are you trying to scare? If you’ve got what it takes, make your husband pass the imperial exam and become a top scholar!” someone retorted. Tang Tang was about to start a fight when Xiao Zhongqin gazed at her with watery eyes. “Wife, you’re amazing!” He patted his own chest. “I can read and write. Becoming the top scholar? I can do that!” Everyone laughed. Only this shrew would feel sorry for the fool! The sound of gongs rang out. Officials had come to deliver good news. “Wait, who did you say was the new top scholar?” “The Duke who’s been staying in your village! Too bad he married a princess, so he won’t be able to become a high-ranking official anymore.” The emperor arrived in a hurry and heard this. Furious, he said, “When did I ever say that marrying a princess meant he couldn’t become a high-ranking official? Go knock on the door! This time, I’m bringing him back no matter what!”
