The Fox Consort Comes in Dreams

This spirit fox was a sacred beast whose lifelong goal was to eat, drink, and have fun. It was lazy even when it came to cultivating immortality, always looking for shortcuts. In the end, it still couldn’t escape the retribution of being struck by lightning during its tribulation! “Is anybody there? Could someone please spare a thought for this fox?” After all the lessons it had learned, this time it didn’t call out loud. Instead, it wailed inwardly. It was so hungry, and the smell coming off its own body was so irresistible, that the fox was ready to take a bite out of itself! “This smells so damn good! Maybe I should take a bite?” Lan Lingxuan had just finished his official duties in the study and was heading back to his bedroom to check on the fox. The moment he entered, he froze. He stared at the fox lying in its nest in disbelief. What had he just seen? Was he hallucinating? Could someone tell him whether that fox lying in its nest, biting its own paw, was real? “Plop!” The paw hit the ground. The fox and the prince both looked at the paw, now dripping with saliva and clearly marked with several bite marks. They looked away, and the fox and the man began an awkward staring match once more. Fire Fox: “Um... would you like to hear me explain?” Lan Lingxuan: “Did this fox get burned into an idiot?” Fire Fox: “It’s not what you think. I had my reasons!” Lan Lingxuan: “I didn’t know you were a self-harming fox! Did you get burned this badly because you were playing with fire and hurting yourself?” Fire Fox: “I’m an injured fox now. You can’t discriminate against my species!” Lan Lingxuan: “Looks like I’ll have to keep a closer eye on you from now on, especially around fire. I don’t want you roasting yourself and eating yourself one day!”
