The Chu-Han Divide

At the end of the Qin Dynasty, Liu Bang and Xiang Yu raised armies against Qin. Fighting side by side, they repeatedly defeated the mighty Qin, admired each other, and swore brotherhood. To spur the feudal lords on and secure a decisive victory, the King of Chu declared that whoever entered Guanzhong first would rule it. As Liu Bang and Xiang Yu competed, they gradually drifted apart and became enemies. After Xiang Yu murdered the king and proclaimed himself ruler, Liu Bang, betrayed by his sworn younger brother, seized the chance to challenge Xiang Yu for betraying both him and the King of Chu.
