Blood-Stained Wujiang River

In October 1938, the Japanese army captured Wuhan and launched an attack on the National Government of Chongqing. As the Three Gorges of the Yangtze River was a natural hazard and heavily guarded, the Japanese army changed its strategy and began to launch large-scale air raids on Chongqing. The Communist Party launched an all-people resistance war behind enemy lines. The Japanese army's front was stretched, supplies were insufficient, and they were caught in a dilemma. The Japanese Third Division stationed in Wuhan led its troops southward to the vast and sparsely populated Wuling Mountains (now southeast of Chongqing) at the junction of Hubei, Hunan, and Sichuan provinces, in an attempt to occupy the Wujiang River and then approach Chongqing in the west. Wujiang River has become a strategic golden artery.
