After the Marco Polo Bridge Incident, in order to preserve the cultural relics of the Forbidden City, the Nationalist Government moved most of the cultural relics of the Forbidden City south to Nanjing on the eve of the fall of Peking, and then moved west to Chongqing on the eve of the fall of Nanjing. On the eve of the liberation of the country, these cultural relics traveled across the ocean to Taiwan and are now in the National Palace Museum in Taipei.
