On the eve of liberation, our Li family, an admirable and terrifying family, existed on the Huaibei Plain. Our great-grandfather, Huai, had eight close brothers, all of whom had extraordinary reputations. Great-great-uncle Li Huaihai served as the deputy minister of railways of the Chinese Kuomintang in Beijing. Great-grandfather Li Huaikuo was the third eldest child and served as the local township's first-level security chief. Sixth-great-uncle Li Huairen was very knowledgeable and graduated from Yenching University. According to my grandfather's nagging in his later years: "Sixth Master is full of knowledge, but full of bad ideas!" My grandfather's eldest sister Yutu was buried alive by Li Huairen. Her grievances always aroused my desire to complain for her. After liberation, my family was a landlord and had completely declined. Li Huairen, who returned from Taiwan, brought back a large amount of money, and everyone in his family and businessmen supported him. Only his grandfather Li Yongdu remained unmoved.
