Who does the mortal world hold dear?
I can only
ask if you feel the same,
if you will give me your heart and let me wear red bridal robes.
Ask if you feel the same,
if you will take my hand and share a love that lasts until we are old.
Scene One: “Xiao Qi, your father knows he will soon be joining your mother. I know you hate me, but, my child, I love you, and I love your mother even more. Heed your father's words: serving the ruler is like serving a tiger. Be yourself again. The last thing I can do for you is let you live the life you want.”
Scene Two: Yan Zhan could hold back no longer. He burst through the door and snatched the baby from the wet nurse before anyone had even had a chance to see whether it was a boy or a girl. With a solemn air, he opened the swaddling cloth. His expression flickered as he looked at the tiny infant, then he ordered the maids, “Spread the word: I, Yan Zhan, have a fine son.”
Scene Three: Yan Qizui said happily, “Jinrui, happy birthday.” Bai Jinrui nodded happily too, then turned to leave, making the same wish in his heart as he had on his last birthday: “I hope Xiao Qi will be with me on every birthday to come.”
Scene Four: Anxious to save someone, Yan Qizui immediately rose to take her leave, only to realize she still did not know the young man's name. “May I ask your name, sir?” The youth seemed a little surprised that Yan Qizui had suddenly asked his name, but answered readily, “Xuanyue.”
Scene Five: “Yuan Yi.” Yan Qizui turned at the sound of the name. After thinking it over, she couldn't help smiling. “Your name? All right, I'll remember it.” She walked away slowly, leaving Yuan Yi to watch her disappear into the distance. He etched that figure, that smile, and that name into his heart: Yan Qizui.
