The Six Paths of Reincarnation

All sentient beings, driven by the causes and conditions of their desires, reap what they sow. Like a turning wheel, they cycle endlessly through life and death, receiving their just due in the six realms. The six realms are the human realm, the heavenly realm, the Asura realm, the hell realm, the hungry ghost realm, and the animal realm.

Those who uphold at least three precepts may attain a human body with all six faculties intact. Those who perfectly observe all five precepts will be born into a wealthy and noble family, live long, and earn fame in the world.

Those who practice the five precepts and cultivate the ten virtues will be born in the heavenly realm.

Even if they practice generosity with a mind inclined toward the ten virtues, those who seek fame, fortune, and victory will be born in the Asura realm. Asuras enjoy heavenly blessings but lack heavenly virtue, because their hearts are tainted and crooked.

Those who abandon moral precepts and give rise to stinginess and greed will fall into the hungry ghost realm. Those who give rise to anger and delusion will fall into the animal realm. Those who commit the five grave offenses and ten evils will fall into hell.

The cycle of rebirth through the six realms can turn on a single thought. One good thought can lead to ascent into the heavenly realm; one evil thought can lead to a fall into the lower realms. The law of cause and effect is clear for all to see.
