A Marriage of Pretend Love

By day, he was a prominent figure in the Ling family, with an iron grip.

By night, he was her nightmare, endless and unrelenting.

She raised her numb gaze, not a trace of warmth in her eyes. "How much longer are you going to keep this up?"

His smile was bewitching, his expression somewhere between a smile and a smirk. "In life, you’re mine. In death, you’ll be my ghost."

One betrayal was enough to make her world wither.

Just as she began to taste the sweetness of love, he spread his demon’s wings once more and cast a vast net, watching as she fell into an endless hell.

In a shadowy corner, his eyes caught a familiar figure, and his heart sank.

He hurried over and saw her huddled beneath the shadows, her shoulders hunched as she screamed in terror and trembled all over. He brushed the loose hair from her forehead. Those once-bright, clear eyes were now clouded over.

She helplessly raised her head and gazed deep into his eyes. "Food... I’m hungry..."

She had gone mad! He was horrified. A sweet, metallic taste rose in his throat as he reached out with trembling hands to hold her, hot tears slipping from the corners of his eyes.

The tender whispers they had shared that year were ultimately lost to time. So this was what love meant: smiling as you drank poison.

[This story has a happy ending. There’s both sweetness and heartbreak along the way: a different story, but one that will cut just as deep.]
