Secrets Beneath the Coral Sea

When she was eight, she was brought to his side. “This is your master from now on.”

“From now on, your name is Zhuying.”

A lovely voice came from above her. She looked up to see a handsome boy who looked as if he had stepped out of a comic book. His voice was clear and sweet.

“Zhuying, this is Xue’er. From now on, you’ll be responsible for her safety.” He said this to her when she was fourteen, a faint smile on his face.

Xue’er lay in a pool of blood. Heartbroken and beside himself with grief, he shouted at her, “Why couldn’t it have been you who died?”

He tricked her into falling into the sea. As she sank beneath the waves, she felt an extraordinary warmth. Dying wasn’t so frightening after all, she thought as the last breath left her chest.

At eighteen, she looked at him in confusion. “Who are you? Have we met?”

“I’m sorry. If I asked you to stay, would you?” he said, choking back tears.

“Sir, you’ve mistaken me for someone else. I’m not the person you’re looking for.”

When they met again at eighteen, she was wary at every turn, while he pressed her at every turn.
